Abstract:
The article analyzes the role of intonation in the grammatical structure of the utterance. It emphasizes the importance of intonation in communication, as it marks syntactic structures and influences the meaning of utterances. The functions of intonation are reviewed – including the communicative, demarcative, modal, emphatic, and expressive functions – and the grammatical function is examined in detail. The analysis focuses on the morphological role of intonation–as a marker for disambiguating homonymy–and its syntactic role, as an indicator of predication and as a means of expressing syntactic relationships and distinguishing between different syntactic units.
