Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of statistical data on Moldovans and Romanians living on Belarus’ lands in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. According to the census of the Russian Empire in 1897, 215 Moldovans and Romanians lived in the Belarusian and Lithuanian lands. In the data used in this census, the concepts of “Moldovan language” and “Romanian language” were generally understood as identical. According to the Polish census of 1921, 12 Romanians lived on the territory of western Belarus. The data used in this census includes ethnic identity and the native language of the population. According to the Soviet census of 1926, 63 Moldovans and 54 Romanians lived in the Belarusian SSR. The gradual formation of the Moldovan diaspora began in the Belarusian lands at the end of the 19th century.
