Abstract

The work explores the challenges faced when learning Romanian idiomatic expressions, particularly those with Latin roots. It highlights the difficulties posed by phraseology, such as the absence of direct equivalents in other languages, the need to understand cultural and historical context, and the ambiguity of certain phrases. Moreover, the syntactic complexity of some idioms makes learners reluctant to use them accurately. Several Latin expressions like "in vino veritas" and "carpe diem" are examined, along with their Romanian counterparts. These expressions carry profound cultural and historical meanings, which are crucial for a deeper understanding of both Romanian language and culture. The work suggests various educational strategies to assist students in learning idiomatic expressions, including practical exercises, literary and cultural analysis, research projects, and the development of teaching materials. Mastering phraseology is essential for achieving linguistic fluency, allowing for more natural and expressive communication while enriching both linguistic and cultural knowledge. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of idiomatic expressions for linguistic fluency and draws connections between Romanian and Latin phraseology. It argues that a properly tailored educational approach can make these expressions more accessible to learners.
