Abstract:
The Water Framework Directive specifies that areas requiring special protection under other EC Directives and waters used for the abstraction of drinking water are identified as protected areas. Article 6 requires Member States to establish a register of protected areas. The types of protected areas that must be included in the register are: areas designated for the abstraction of water for human consumption; areas designated for the protection of economically significant aquatic species; bodies of water designated as recreational waters; nutrient-sensitive areas, including areas identified as nitrate vulnerable zones under the Nitrates Directive or areas designated as sensitive under Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive; areas designated for the protection of habitats or species. On 11/15/2018, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova votes on Law no. 249 for the amendment of the Water Law no. 272/2011, and through this it becomes a necessity to identify and map protected areas compilant with the Water Framework Directive. This material describes the results of the identification and mapping process.
