Abstract:
Physical Geography of the Republic of Moldova has developed as a science in geographical
studies in the former USSR. As a separate subject, it has been studied in the schools of the Republic since
the 80s of the last century. Several generations had as a source of information the geography textbooks,
the content of which changes as information accumulates as a result of scientific research conducted by
employees of the Section, then the Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the former
Moldovan SSR. The list of illustrious researchers includes such names as of V. Proca, A. Levadniuc, V.
Sofroni, D. Roșcovan, N. Râmbu and others.
The most important part of this subject represents the relief of the region in which our republic is
located, owing to the fact that it substantially determines the formation of natural conditions,
microclimate, hydrographic network, vegetation and soils. In the socio-economic activity, the man is
permanently involved in the study of the relief from the point of view of the establishment of the place of
residence, the formation of the localities and their infrastructure. Knowledge of orographic conditions is
important for successful land use, crop rotation and irrigation, construction of hydrotechnical objects,
transport routes and communication lines. The Physical Geography of the Republic of Moldova has a
rich volume of information from the Geomorphology department, the scientific base of which was
founded by famous scientists including A. Gherasimov, I. Mescereakov, N. Podobedov etc. The Romanian
scientific sources and works of the scientists like I. Donisă, M. Ielenicz etc are also valuable
geomorphological information.
