Abstract:
Non-suicidal self-injury is used by adolescents to cope with annoying negative affectivity. Although previously thought to be a feature of severe psychopathology, non-suicidal self-injury is currently associated with varying conditions of externalizing and internalizing, and effective treatment is based on an adequate understanding of the function of self-injury behavior for adolescents. Psychosocial factors are addressed through psychotherapeutic strategies, with an emphasis on the development of communication skills.
