Abstract:
The article pinpoints a number of aspects pertaining to the constitution of scientific terminology in Romanian based on proper nouns (anthroponyms and toponyms). We list the distinctive marks of proper and common nouns, as well as the changes of paradigm that occur following their transition from one class to another. Three active directions of deonimisation are analysed: conversion of a proper noun to a common one without the application of formative instruments; suffixation of the proper noun, which then becomes a common one; and creation of terminological phrases that include the targeted proper noun, where the determinate is a common noun, while the determiner is a proper one. We also discuss how students may learn and actively use such scientific terminology.
