The present article touches upon the phonological value of the sounds which is of huge importance to the learners. Each language has its specific inventory of vowels. The vowel system in English is much more complicated and presents more complex problems than that of consonants. The vowel system is classified according to five criteria. One of the characteristic features of the English vowels is the way they are pronounced according to four types of reading. Vowels (monophthongs) have a strong position within the phonological system and are resistant being in an unstressed position, viable combined with other sounds, however preserving their quality. |
