Abstract:
Multilingualism refers to the harmonious coexistence of multiple languages within a geographical, social, or institutional space, representing not only a linguistic phenomenon but also a key strategy for fostering inclusion, mobility, and intercultural dialogue. In the European context, it is recognized as a core value of the European Union and a pillar in building a plural European identity. International organizations such as the Council of Europe, UNESCO, and the European Commission actively promote multilingualism through policies, legislative frameworks, and concrete projects, viewing it as a catalyst for social cohesion and cultural diversity. This article, developed within the course ”Language Policies in the European Context” and the research subprogram ”Training Teachers for Multilingual Communication in an Intercultural Context”, examines European strategies for promoting multilingualism, their effectiveness in countries such as Italy, Belgium, and Spain, the current challenges, and proposes innovative solutions, with a special focus on the need to develop a coherent national strategy in the Republic of Moldova.
